Terms of Use
Last updated 11 October 2026
Use Lumen to learn, not to hand in AI-written work as your own. AI can be wrong, so check what matters with your teacher. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law always apply.
These terms are an agreement between you and Lumen (“we”, “us”) about using Lumen. By creating an account or using Lumen, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Lumen.
1. Who can use Lumen
Lumen is for students, mainly in Years 11 and 12 in New South Wales. If you're under 18, you need your parent or guardian's permission to use Lumen, and they should read these terms with you.
2. What Lumen is
Lumen uses AI to write practice papers, notes and flashcards, mark answers and tutor you. Everything it makes is AI-generated and can be wrong: questions, answers, marks, bands and feedback included. Lumen is a practice aid. It isn't a replacement for your teacher, your school's assessments, or the official past papers and marking guidelines, and its marks don't predict your HSC results.
Lumen is independent and isn't affiliated with, or endorsed by, NESA (the NSW Education Standards Authority) or any school.
3. Academic honesty
Use Lumen to learn. Don't submit anything Lumen writes as your own work in any assessment, assignment or exam. Follow your school's rules and the HSC's rules, including HSC: All My Own Work. You're responsible for how you use what Lumen makes.
4. Your account
- Give accurate details, keep your password private, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
- One person per account. You're responsible for what happens on your account.
5. Acceptable use
Don't:
- break the law, or use Lumen to harass, harm or deceive anyone;
- try to get around plan limits, rate limits or security, or access other people's data;
- scrape, automate or overload Lumen, or reverse engineer it;
- use Lumen to make harmful, hateful or sexual content, or upload content you don't have the right to share.
We may limit, suspend or close accounts that break these rules.
6. Your content
What you write and what Lumen makes for you is yours to use for your own study. You give us permission to process your content only as needed to run Lumen, for example sending it to AI providers to answer you. See our Privacy Policy for how we handle it.
Only upload texts you have the right to use, such as your own copy of a text you're studying, and only for your own study. Lumen doesn't store uploaded texts or share them with anyone.
7. Our content
Lumen's software, design, logo and brand belong to us. Don't copy or reuse them without our permission.
8. Plans and payments
- Free has daily and monthly limits, shown in the app. We may change the limits, and will show the current ones in the app.
- Paid raises those limits (Paid has its own daily limits, shown in the app) and adds Supercharged answers. Prices are in Australian dollars. Lumen isn't registered for GST, so no GST is charged.
- New accounts get a few trial credits, with no card. Each one unlocks one Paid feature, and they expire 7 days after the first is used. When they run out you stay on Free unless you choose to pay: the trial never turns into a charge on its own.
- Paid is a subscription, monthly or yearly, charged in advance when you start and then on the same day each month or year until you cancel. Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see your full card number. If a parent or guardian pays, they agree to these payment terms.
- You can cancel at any time in Settings → Billing → Manage subscription. Paid stays on until the end of the period you've paid for, and you won't be charged again. You can switch between monthly and yearly there too.
- We don't refund part-used periods, except where the Australian Consumer Law requires it (see section 9). If you've been charged by mistake, or something went wrong, email us at lumenhsc@gmail.com and we'll put it right.
- You can also buy credit packs: a one-off payment, not a subscription, and credits don't expire. Your free or Paid limits are always used first: a credit is only used once you've reached one, for one more of that thing that day, or when you choose something that costs a credit (a Supercharged answer on Free, or unlocking a full-marks rewrite). Credits have no cash value and can't be transferred, and unused credits aren't refunded except where the Australian Consumer Law requires it; deleting your account removes them.
- Students sitting the HSC this year can buy the HSC pass instead: one payment for Paid until 30 November that year, then back to Free. It isn't a subscription and nothing renews. Its price depends on the month you buy it, shown before you pay.
- Paid (and the HSC pass) includes a number of credits each month, shown in the app. They're for going past a daily limit, don't roll over to the next month and have no cash value.
- If a payment for a credit pack or the HSC pass is refunded or disputed, what it bought is taken back.
- If a payment fails, Stripe retries it for a while; if it still doesn't go through, your account goes back to Free.
- If we change the price, we'll tell you at least 30 days before it applies, and it only applies from your next renewal, so you can cancel first.
9. Australian Consumer Law
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that can't be excluded. Where the law allows us to limit our liability for a failure to meet a consumer guarantee, our liability is limited to supplying the service again or paying the cost of having it supplied again.
10. Availability and liability
We work to keep Lumen running and accurate, but we can't promise it will always be available, error-free or suited to your needs. Subject to section 9 and to the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential loss, including loss caused by relying on AI-generated content, or for data kept only on your device.
11. Ending your use
You can stop using Lumen at any time, and ask us to delete your account at lumenhsc@gmail.com. We may suspend or end access if these terms are broken.
12. Changes
We may update these terms. We'll tell you in the app about significant changes, and the date at the top shows when they last changed. Using Lumen after a change means you accept it.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia, and you and we submit to the courts of New South Wales.
